Sweden celebrates International Women’s Day with baby strollers

In celebration of International Women’s Day today, hundreds of women (700+) with babies, strollers, dogs, and a few men in tow gathered in Norrmalmstorg, then headed down Hamngatan, past Kungsträdgården towards Sergels torg – the center of Stockholm in what is called Barnvagnsmarschen (Babystroller March) – organized by Unite For Women. The march also took place in 18 other cities across the country.

1. Gathering in the squareHundreds of women gathered in Norrmalmstorg to prep their strollers, bundle up their babies, and get ready for the march. Norrmalmstorg is well known for a 1973 hostage crisis which produced the term - Stockholm syndrome.

2. Handing out signsWhite picket boards with messages like "Aid helps" and "Childbirth - The most dangerous day in a woman's life" were brought to the rally while some were also handed out.

4. Mothers and babiesHundreds of new mothers - likely on their one-year maternity leave - came in droves with babies ranging from a few months to 2 years old.

8. White Ribbon AllianceRepresentatives from the international coalition - White Ribbon Alliance for Safe Motherhood - also made appearances carrying a large blue banner on behalf of the organization.
